My journey with raw feeding began in 2010 when I adopted my first dog, Chip, who has never fared well on processed diets.
Nine years ago, the information available online regarding raw feeding was limited at best: feed 10% bone, 10% organ, and 80% meat. Rotate chicken, beef, pork, and fish. The diet seemed simple enough…until it wasn’t. Chip did no better on what was supposed to be the “ideal” diet; in fact, he did worse. What I didn’t realize at the time was that nutrition is more than meat, bones, and organs. Nutrition is an intricate science that deals with a dog’s individual needs for specific ingredients. Not just macronutrients like protein, fat, and carbohydrates, but nitty-gritty, micronutrients that many of us aren’t used to considering. When was the last time you went through your ingredients and thought, “I wonder how many milligrams of zinc this beef is providing”, or “where exactly is my dog’s vitamin E coming from”?
